Why is the city considering building an industrial garage in the heart of the city commercial/business district and blocking off the public from the park and Village Hall? Please consider using the available school or township properties that are not at the access to parks and public meeting places and not in a historic business district. This is really a bad use of highly valuable property and a detriment to the value of our downtown.

The Facilities Committee is making decisions about what will be bid for a city DPW garage and Village Hall expansion but there is no documentation on how those decisions are made. Can't there be a consistent policy for all committees with their activities reported in writing to the council and public as originally resolved by the Council many years ago?

This could fall under many categories so I thought it best to put it here as a separate initiative. There are many sidewalks and crosswalks in the city that do not meet the accessibility standards of the Michigan Barrier Free Code and ADA. The sidewalk at the parking area south of Rudy's Market is a prime example. The new midblock crossing on Main Street at Church has no curb cut or tactile paving on the east side in the path of travel. There are other areas that have no curb cuts, no tactile paving for those with poor vision, no crossing lines, excessive run and cross slope, and the ongoing problems with raised and cracked sidewalk segments. We have an elderly population, children, veterans and others with disabilities that I'm sure would like to enjoy the village like everyone else. Are there any plans to deal with these conditions? I know there is a Streets and Sidewalks Committee but I have not heard of this being addressed by the Committee, Council or in budgeting.

There is a ton of bike traffic up and down Holcomb. Extending the sidewalk would create safer travel for bikers and families as they go over I-75 and beyond. I've seen a fair amount of young children with their parents and teens riding their bikes on the side of Holcomb and I cringe. Additionally, if it extended down to Springfield Elementary I think there would be a significant increase in the amount of families that would opt to travel via walking or biking to the school and/or downtown. Not a bad way to spend some of the $90k+ that Clarkston is going to receive from the federal government stimulus; not that $90k would cover a project of that size.

I saw 3 different dates for the next Facilities Committee. I planned to go to the meeting this morning, but then saw that the meeting time was changed again to Wed March 2. Please be sure the correct time is posted, so subscribers do not keep getting these emails about date and time changes.
The idea to notify residents about new meeting dates and changes is a good idea, but when I get several emails about changes, I tend to ignore them, because I assume it is an email I previously received.
Also, I think 1 or 2 day notice is not sufficient time to notify residents about an upcoming meeting, especially when the committee is discussing a very controversial subject that interests a lot of residents.

There is no known policy for removing any comment or suggestion, much in the same way that there is no policy for the city's quasi official Facebook presence. So who is the Village of Clarkston and who is making the decisions? By the way, this web site has been up for a couple of months now and is at best cumbersome and far less than intuitive. Does anyone monitor activity, how many people actually use it or any another statistical analysis of whether it is a burden or benefit to the taxpayers? Just curious since it is never discussed or mentioned by the Council or anyone else.

More than anything else, a city, state, village, etc, should provide services to its residents. These are services that can be best handled by pooling the tax money paid by the citizens. From my community, I look for safety, fire, schools, traffic, streets, sidewalks, water, sewer, garbage, and recreation, as the "biggies." In a once semi-rural community as Clarkston, I realize that all these services are not provided, such as water and garbage collection, for everyone. But, I do want to see the other services provided at a level commensurate with the high city taxes we pay. I do not care how the city does it, but I want to see these services provided in an economical manner. That does not include building an unnecessary, unattractive, and unsafe building in Depot park. That is not what my tax money should be going for. My city does not need to build this "monument" but needs to provide services.

It would be a grand idea to encourage them to use these Enos and hangout in our lovely park. Main reason being who doesn't love enjoying the sun in a hammock. Second reason, now this is a big plus, while these adults/children are in our park they will be more tempted to visit Rudy's and other local stores we have in walking range! Bringing in extra revenue!

They also blast very inappropriate music and there is always people fighting and swearing. They have completely destroyed the Pavilion and made it a very unsafe place for children. I feel like there needs to be more security and/or something out in place so they can’t do that anymore. It’s supposed to be a safe place for kids to run around and play not for them to have to fear the drugs or fighting. They are setting a very bad example for younger kids and at their age they are very influential and they are sending the wrong messages to kids.

Is there a greater benefit to improved sidewalks, code enforcement, better crosswalks, more park amenities, public art, etc.? I'm sure someone has studied this even if not in the Village of Clarkston> Shouldn't we know that we are getting the best return on our tax dollars before they are spent instead of finding out afterwards when it is too late to do anything about it? I would love to hear from other people on this and what they think would have the best economic development potential for the Village.

Winter is coming again and we will once again have the problem of when snow is removed from sidewalks. So that everyone understands the time and cost involved, I think the city should try and clear the sidewalks throughout the city and see not only what it costs, but what type of feedback the city gets from residents and visitors. At a minimum it should be tried in the downtown area where there is no room for businesses to go with snow. It could be a great incentive for people to come to the Village and probably not cost that much money since the DPW already has the equipment to do it and is here. If the city can do all the roads, other than those done by the County, it just makes sense for them to do the sidewalks which are all part of the public right of way.

There are signs in Depot Park about a Community Conversation on November 16 at the Library to discuss plans for the park. The signs also say to put ideas in this section of the city web site. So far, there doesn't appear to be anything new and the top issue is not to build a DPW Garage in the park even though the Facilities Committee is still considering that for unknown reasons.
Simple things that could be done:
1. Put the bike rack back where it is more usable, not 40 feet off the path. Add another one to encourage their use.
2. Fix the water fountain so it works unlike all of this year.
3. Make sure the Poopy Pouch dispensers have bags (they often don't) so people can clean up after their animals.
4. Consider lighting along the path so that it is more usable and safe in the evening, especially since it is getting dark earlier.
5. Plant native plants and other gardens that don't need the time, expense and pollution of mowing every week.

Many other communities have these and they would help businesses and individuals know what is required and why when considering work or purchasing in the Village of Clarkston. Guidelines and precedent would help those who want to do work here and provide consistency to the work that is done.
