Clarkston has a downtown business district which has been designated a National Historical Site.

The charm of the downtown conveys a nostalgia and picturesque setting that everyone enjoys. With numerous homes on the historical register, the City of the Village of Clarkston is a lively small town surrounded by a rapidly growing rural and suburban area. The houses and stores that eighty or a hundred years ago were home and business to the families of the people on the lake will take you back a step in time. Residents are quick to tell you of the virtues of the community and seem to be at ease in welcoming newcomers. Dining and shopping, together with the Village and Township government, sustain the economic base of the community.
